Which extracts should not be used on hair?

When choosing hair care products, it’s essential to be aware of certain extracts and ingredients that might not be suitable for your hair or scalp.

Here are some extracts and ingredients that are often advised to be avoided or used with caution:

  • Alcohol-Based Extracts: High concentrations of alcohol (e.g., ethanol, isopropyl alcohol) can dry out the hair and scalp,

leading to brittleness and irritation. Opt for products with low or no alcohol content.

  • Sulfur-Based Extracts: Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES),

are harsh detergents that can strip the hair of its natural oils, causing dryness and irritation. Look for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners.

  • Parabens: These are preservatives used to prevent microbial growth in cosmetics.

Some people may experience sensitivity or allergic reactions to parabens, so many prefer paraben-free products.

  • Synthetic Fragrances: Many synthetic fragrances contain allergens or irritants that can cause scalp irritation or allergic reactions.

Opt for products with natural fragrances or those labeled as fragrance-free.

  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents: These chemicals are used as preservatives in some hair products but can be irritating and potentially harmful.

They are best avoided, especially in leave-in products and hair straightening treatments.

  • Silicones: Silicones like dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane can build up on the hair over time,

leading to a weighed-down feeling and preventing moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. Consider products without silicones if you experience build-up.

  • Harsh Essential Oils: While some essential oils can benefit the hair, others, like peppermint or cinnamon oil,

can be irritating if used in high concentrations. Always dilute essential oils properly and do a patch test before use.

  • Artificial Colors: Some hair products contain artificial dyes that can cause allergic reactions or irritate sensitive skin.

Look for products that are free from artificial colorants if you have sensitive skin.

  • Heavy Waxes and Oils: Extracts or products containing heavy waxes and oils can cause build-up and weigh down the hair,

making it appear greasy. Be cautious with the amount and type of oils used.

  • Heavy Metals: Some natural extracts may contain trace amounts of heavy metals or contaminants.

It’s essential to choose high-quality products and avoid those with questionable sourcing or production practices.

When using any new product or extract, it’s a good idea to do a patch test to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction or sensitivity.

Additionally, choose products that align with your hair type and scalp needs to avoid adverse effects.
